A
collection of new works by artist Jeffar Khaldi.
Local artist Jeffar Khaldi is ready to make a mark on Dubai 's
art scene with his new solo exhibition. Confrontational, powerful,
provocative and passionate, all adjectives that critics and collectors
use to describe his work.
From April 25 to May 10, the progressive art gallery B21 will
be temporary home to some of Khaldi's latest paintings.
The large canvasses showed in this exhibition are recent work,
coming from an intense creative force the artist has accumulated
for many years without expressing it. The work combines paint,
wallpaper and other materials with strong colour, bold and confident
brushstrokes. It stirs the principles of conventional design
and composition, reflecting the strong influence of Neo-Expressionist
movement, including artists such as Georg Baselitz, Gerhrard
Richter, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Albert Oelhen among others.
Blurring the lines between abstract and figurative, Khaldi's
art is powerful and striking, sprinkled with elements of mysticism.
A Palestinian born in Lebanon in 1964, Jeffar Khaldi moved to
Texas at the age of 16 having spent 8 years of his young life
amid the turmoil of the Lebanese civil war. His early experiences
have naturally had a deep impact on him. The intervening years
in America were spent studying Interior Architecture while pursuing
his art. It was during this time that Jeffar was introduced to
the Neo-Expressionism movement that has inspired him ever since.
Based in Dubai for the last 10 years, the pace of change and
the accompanying chaos of the city have also influenced his work.
During his first year in
the UAE, Khaldi was honored with the grand creativity prize
of the 1996 Sharjah Biennale. |
